Dear Praying Partners,
The Lifegate team arrived back in San Antonio at about 4:30 January 1st. I wish to extend my deepest appreciation for all your prayers and support. It was evident the Lord’s hand of blessing was upon our ministry. At times I even physically sensed the Lord’s presence while preaching. I noticed this most notably at the Sunday evening crusade preaching the glorious gospel in Kampala while facing the largest Mosque in East Africa. This huge and beautiful Mosque was just across the valley! Your prayers were a means of the gospel going forth in the power of the Holy Spirit! I had the privilege to preach some 40+ times and had numerous conversations with many concerning our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Thank You for your prayers!
Most of my first week in Uganda I and three pastors from the Presbyterian Church in Uganda (PCU) were in the North Uganda town of Moyo. We also spent a day in South Sudan where I was able to preach in a Sudanese church. The conference and crusade in Moyo went well. About 220 church leaders from north Uganda and south Sudan were present for the conference. The ministry of the Word was well received. Many were saved in the crusade which was held in a park in the middle of Moyo. I was impressed with how these new believers were received into the family of God. This is a e-mail I just received from Pastor Abraham, who was the chief organizer for the conference/crusade in Moyo: “Thank Jesus Christ who is in you to reveal his life through you while you were with us in Moyo for the Gospel Crusade and Leader's training conference December 2007.For many of us saw clearly how the Holy spirit was speaking to us the pure truth of the Word of God as you taught us all the sessions. All the Church leaders in this conference have been carefully receiving your teachings and testified that what you have taught is the truth of the Word of God. I was so blessed seeing the Holy Spirit through you graciously bringing light of the truth of the Word of God as you taught; this has open up the Church Leadership in Moyo, Adjumani and Sudan to you so that Christ may minister to them by you in future even more.
I want thank you and your family for obeying the Holy Spirit to allow you come to Moyo and be used to bless us with all the grace He the Lord Jesus Christ placed in your life to serve him with. We have much joy to praise the Lord for you and the Lifegate Church in USA for all their support to this conference and Crusade in Moyo.”
The brethren at this conference were such a beautiful picture of God’s grace and love. Many were saved while fleeing for their lives or while in Refugee camps. The Lord providentially established churches through them when they returned back to their homes. There is now peace in northern Uganda and southern Sudan. The door is currently open to plant churches and strengthen the Body of Christ through sound biblical teaching. I was told about 60% of the villages in Moyo and Adjumani Districts have no gospel witness. No doubt the percentage is higher in south Sudan. South Sudan thinks of itself as separate country from the north. In fact the license plates and border signs said “New Sudan”. I do fear that there will be a civil war with the north some time soon. There is a lot of oil and minerals in the south and the Arab north will not want to let it go. It was very humbling to be asked by many brothers in both Moyo and Sudan to stay and work with them. The door is open there and my heart is very inclined to preach/teach God’s Word with them more extensively. The need is for foundational biblical teaching for pastors and leaders in the churches. There is virtually no training for the pastors shepherding all the churches which have been birthed and will be planted.
The four of us were due to return to Kampala on 23rd but only Pastor Patrick made it. It was good he was able to return as he was one which needed to pick of the Tostado’s. When the three of us saw the small plane take off from the grass runway we then knew for sure the Lord wanted us to stay another day. We subsequently went to the Nile River were it crosses into the Sudan. What a beautiful river! Pastor Odom, I have a rock for your collection from the Nile! On our returned we walked into the bush to see some ancestral worship sites. Providentially, along the path way was the crucifix wearing witch doctor that performed animal sacrifices. He led us to the ancestral stones and the sacrificing stone. After being told of what happened at these stones I had an engaging conversation with him of his need to turn away from ancestor worship and turn to the only sacrificed one for our sins. God opened his heart and he verbally renounced ancestor worship (there was a good size crowd around us) and he trusted Jesus Christ for his salvation. We then understood why the Lord kept us one more day in Moyo!
Back in Kampala Sylvia, Abby and I celebrated Christmas at 1st Presbyterian were the ladies gave testimonials and I preached. After the service we had a wonderful meal and time of fellowship in Pastor Patrick Bukenya’s home. The church choir and evangelism team were there as well. The 26th-29th Sylvia taught the women and I the men at the conference held at 1st Presbyterian. Abby was involved in children’s ministry and home to home witnessing. There was a good representation from numerous churches in Kampala and the surrounding area. The Word taught was listened to intently and I am confident it will be acted upon as well. The evenings of the 26th – 30th a crusade was held and I had the privilege to preach all five evenings. The days started early and we usually did not get back to Patrick’s home until after 10PM and then we would eat supper.
Over a 1,000 Mt. Zion booklets (www.mountzion.org ) were handed out to church leaders from Uganda and southern Sudan as well as 500 of CJ Mahaney’s book Living the Cross Centered Life (www.sovereigngraceministries.org ). In addition, 500 Reformation Study Bibles (www.ligonier.org ) were given to pastors and church leaders. Also, 540 of John Piper's book Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ (www.desiringgod.org ) were distributed to leaders from both Uganda and South Sudan. They were overjoyed to receive these great teaching tools!
A wonderful partnership with the PCU is continuing to be strengthened. A new partnership in north Uganda and southern Sudan has been established. May the Lord continue to strengthen our bonds for the extension of His kingdom in Uganda and Sudan! Thank you all for your part in this endeavor!
I hope you enjoy a few of the pictures taken in Uganda and Sudan.
In His Grip,
Jacob Lee
